Her focus

Dr. Su is a board-certified urologist, a fellowship-trained urologic oncologist and a robotic surgeon. Urologic oncology is the care of cancers of the urinary tract and the male reproductive organs. Her main clinical interest is prostate cancer, kidney cancer and bladder cancer.

She also treats the problems urologists see every day: kidney stones, an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH), urinary incontinence in men and women, voiding dysfunction (trouble emptying the bladder or controlling when you go), erectile dysfunction and low testosterone.

In the operating room she uses both open surgery and minimally invasive techniques. These include robotic surgery, laparoscopy (surgery through small incisions with a camera) and endourology (procedures done through the urinary tract with thin scopes, with no incisions). Training

Dr. Su is a native of Los Angeles. She went to college and medical school at UC San Diego through the Medical Scholars program, a combined BA/MD program. She graduated summa cum laude with a double major in economics and biology. During medical school she took an extra year to earn a master’s degree in clinical research, the “MAS” after her name.

She completed her general surgery internship and urology residency at Yale School of Medicine. As a resident she did research and presented it at regional and national meetings, including the annual meeting of the American Urological Association, and internationally at the World Congress of Endourology in Paris. She also published a book chapter on urologic anatomy.

After residency she completed a fellowship in robotic surgery and urologic oncology at the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica.

How she practices

She reads your scans with you

At your consultation, Dr. Su goes over your chart and pulls up your images, so you can see what she sees. Then she explains it in plain language. You are welcome to ask questions until it makes sense.

You hear every option

Surgery is not always the answer, even for a surgeon. For prostate cancer, the choices can include active surveillance (careful monitoring), focal therapy (treating only the part of the prostate with cancer), radiation and hormone therapy as well as surgery. Many small kidney stones pass on their own. Dr. Su lays out each reasonable option, including the ones that don’t involve an operation, and tells you what she recommends for you and why.

Cancer care is a team effort

Dr. Su works closely with medical oncologists and radiation oncologists, so your plan reflects every kind of treatment that might help. When surgery is the right choice, she tailors it to you and to the tumor. For kidney cancer, for example, she removes only the tumor and saves the rest of the kidney whenever she can.

Dr. Su sees patients at three offices: Long Beach on Monday, Friday and the 1st, 3rd and 5th Wednesday, Koreatown on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday, and Beverly Grove at Comprehensive Urology on Tuesday and Thursday.

Outside the office

When she isn’t taking care of patients, Dr. Su enjoys running, hiking and spending time with her family. She is learning golf and appreciates any and all tips.
