One insurance company can sell many plans, and each plan can have its own network. Please call the office where you want to be seen to confirm that your specific plan is in network before your visit.

Before you call

Having these ready makes the call quicker:

  • Your insurance card. The office may ask for your member ID and group number.
  • The name and type of your plan, such as PPO, HMO, Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan. It is usually printed on the card.
  • Your primary care doctor and medical group, if you are in an HMO or an IPA. An IPA (independent physician association) is a group of doctors that contracts with health plans.
  • A referral or authorization, if your plan has already given you one.
  • The office you want to visit, since coverage is not the same at every office.

Referrals and authorizations

Whether you need a referral depends on your plan. Many HMO plans, and plans managed through a medical group or IPA, require a referral from your primary care doctor before you see a specialist. Many PPO plans do not.

Some plans also require approval in advance, called prior authorization, before certain tests, procedures or surgery. The rules differ from plan to plan. If you are not sure what yours requires, call the member services number on the back of your insurance card, or ask the office when you call.

Medicare

All three offices are in network with Medicare. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, which is Medicare coverage run by a private insurance company, ask the office about your specific plan.

If you need surgery

Dr. Su has privileges at several hospitals in Los Angeles, Santa Monica and Long Beach. Where your surgery takes place can depend on the procedure and your insurance plan. See Questions and answers for the full list of hospitals, and Before your surgery for what to do once a date is set.

Questions patients ask

Does every office take the same insurance?

No. Long Beach and Koreatown are in network with PPO plans from Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, Cigna and UnitedHealthcare, with CENTER IPA, and with Medicare. Long Beach is also in network with MemorialCare Independent Physicians and MemorialCare Medical Group. Beverly Grove is in network with most PPO plans and with Medicare.

My plan isn’t in the table. Can I still be seen?

Call the office you would like to visit. They can tell you whether Dr. Su is in network with your plan at that location.

Do I need a referral to see Dr. Su?

It depends on your plan. HMO and IPA plans often require one from your primary care doctor. Many PPO plans do not. The office can help you check.
