When a test result brings you in
Dr. Su is a board-certified urologist and a fellowship-trained urologic oncologist. Urologic cancer care often starts with a test result: a PSA that is high or rising, a mass seen on a scan, or a biopsy that shows cancer. Here is how Dr. Su approaches each one.
A high or rising PSA
A high PSA is a reason to look closer, not a diagnosis. Biomarker blood or urine tests and a prostate MRI can help decide whether you need a biopsy. If you do, Dr. Su performs MRI-ultrasound fusion biopsy, which targets the areas the MRI flagged.
A mass on a scan
Most kidney cancers are found by chance, on imaging done for something else. When possible, Dr. Su removes only the tumor and saves the rest of the kidney, often robotically through a few small incisions.
A new diagnosis
Depending on the stage and how aggressive the cancer is, options can include active surveillance (careful monitoring), focal therapy, radiation, hormone therapy and robotic prostatectomy. Dr. Su works closely with medical and radiation oncologists.
Second opinions
If you already have a diagnosis and want another view, bring your pathology report and your imaging. Dr. Su will review them with you and go over all your options, including the ones that don’t involve surgery.
General urology
Dr. Su also treats the problems urologists see every day. That includes an enlarged prostate, with procedures such as Aquablation, a heat-free waterjet treatment she offers in the Los Angeles area.
Hospital privileges
Dr. Su has privileges at Cedars-Sinai. She also has privileges at Providence Saint John’s in Santa Monica and at several other hospitals in Los Angeles, Glendale and Long Beach. Where your surgery takes place can depend on the procedure and your insurance plan.
Insurance at the Beverly Grove office
The Beverly Grove office is in network with most PPO plans and with Medicare. That is different from Dr. Su’s other two offices, so please call (310) 278-8330 to confirm your plan before your visit. See the insurance page to compare offices.
